Are Your Loved Ones In Spirit Trying To Tell You Something? Interview with James Van Praagh

JAMES VAN PRAAGH: “This is the final conversation out of a series of four with medium James Van Praagh. Here James discusses what messages our deceased loved ones commonly try to communicate to us from the spirit world. I ask James how quickly our loved ones attempt communication with us after their passing, what affects our ability to recognize the signs and signals our loved ones in spirit send us, how long people should wait before getting a reading with a medium, and also why people in spirit might communicate to one person in the family (say in a dream) as opposed to other family members. We even chat about what people can do on their own (without the help of a medium) to communicate with people in spirit.” ~ Bob Olson, Afterlife TV

James Van Praagh talks about after-death communication.

WOULD LOVE TO TALK TO YOU?

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Darlene,

I’m glad you enjoyed the video conversation with James Van Praagh. I wish that I had the time to chat with people personally to hear everyone’s stories, but there are just too many of you with interesting stories to tell. But I’d love to read your story if you want to email it via the Contact page. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  5. Kathleen says:

This was a great interview. When my mom passed 6 years ago from Alzheimer’s (I was her caregiver for 6 years), we had a lot of signs from her for about the first 2 1/2 months after she passed. The lights would blink off ,and the television and phone would shut off whenever I would talk about her with my brother on the telephone. I also heard her call my name one morning right before I woke up. All of these things were amazing and very comforting in my time of grief, and I cherish those experiences. I feel that she was trying to let me know that she is fine, and back to herself again, after suffering for so long from dementia.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Kathleen,

Wow, what cool experiences. I, too, believe that’s what she was trying to tell you.

Thanks for those examples of after-death communication,

  6. Christine Bouck says:

wow this is great stuff!!!! I’m going to tell all and I want to go somewhere that supports these beliefs and James Vanpraag is awesome I wish he could do me a reading. I like Sylvia Browne too. u got anything with her or any insite on her?

  7. Christine Bouck says:

I am very intereseted and I’m a believer but just one question. Where does God come into all of this? Is there a God included in James beliefs or the ohers u have interveiwed?

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Christine,

That’s a great question. While I certainly can’t speak for my guests, most authors and experts generally believe in some concept of God, which they might refer to as God, Goddess, the Universe, Source, Divinity, Grace, and so on. Personally, I respect the beliefs of all my audience members, and I believe my guests do, as well. So my intention is to teach about the afterlife in a context that’s a bit ambiguous in this way, speaking more about spirituality and spiritual growth rather than religion. To me, the point of these Conversations and Reports is to pass along the conclusions of one person’s experiences (my truth or a guest’s truth) so that you and other audience members can investigate for yourselves and make up your own minds as to what is your individual truths. Only you can truly decide where God fits into all this for you, which is why your question has not been directly answered in any of these videos. I hope that makes sense to you.

  8. Jill says:

I saw the “Beyond Belief” show in which Van Praagh was on. And I agree, that they portrayed him as well as the concept of life after death in a negative way. I was deep in grief after losing my father when I saw this show-hoping to find comfort that spirit goes on. The show did all it could to debunk the idea but I have chosen to go with my gut and embrace the concept of life after death. Was upset to see Beyod Belief was going to be on Oprah Network soon. I’ll email her too !

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Jill,

Thanks for your comment. That TV special really was slanted heavily in an effort to debunk. Hearing your story reminds me of why this kind of biased journalism can be harmful. So many people simply assume these shows are based on investigative journalism, so they believe what the shows edit for their intended bias, leaving the bereaved confused and hopeless that they’ll be able to connect with their loved ones in spirit, or that they will ever see them again. I’m happy to hear you aren’t one of those people. Keep investigating for yourself and you’ll soon know the truth.

  9. Wanda Miller says:

I just recently lost my 22 year old son and my 18 year old daughter in a car accident, back in August of 2010. This has absolutely been the hardest thing I have ever had to go through. I would give just about anything to have a visit with my children. How do I go about doing this and with whom should I contact? Is it very expensive to have a session with a medium? I am very fascinated with this subject. I would greatly appreciate any reply or response I can get back from you on this matter. Thanks you so very much.

    A griever mother of 2
    Wanda Miller

    • Bob Olson says:

      HI Wanda,

I’m very sorry to learn about your loss. Aside from watching the videos on, I recommend getting a book titled Hello From Heaven by Bill & Judy Guggenheim. It teaches you the various ways that our loved ones in spirit contact us. But also check out my list of recommended books at for more selections.

To answer your question about mediums, their fees range from very little to hundreds of dollars. You don’t have to pay a lot to get a great reading. Check out my directory on for a list of over 700 psychics and mediums. Be sure to read about each one, make sure they are a medium (not a psychic), and visit their websites to choose the medium who most resonates with you. You can also visit my recommended list on, but you can expect their fees to be on the higher side, as these mediums are some of the best and most experienced.

I write a lot about psychics and mediums on my directory. See the What’s New section (on the left side of every page) for my articles about them. And on (this website), check out my REPORTS videos that teach a lot about how to choose the best medium for you. I have a few videos on this subject.

      My warmest wishes to you,

  10. Pat Chichester says:

Hi Bob, James is another of my favorite mediums. Enjoyed the interview very much. I get upset about his TV show Beyond Belief I watched all the time because he was a part of it. Now that I know what they did I upset. I guess because I like James so much…. I’ll be looking forward to more interviews. Thanks

  11. Theresa W says:

    Hi Bob:

Great interview. My 16 year old daughter about 5 years ago, when she was 11, started seeing spirits in our house that we had built. After we moved out, the spirits left but then she began to see different ones. Before our moving out, my Mom passed away. At the funeral home, my daughter was looking at her body. Then she turned with tears and a smile, a big smile on her face. I asked her why she was smiling and she said,” Memmaw is looking down at herself in the casket. She is at the head of the casket and looking at herself. Her hair is a mess and she is wearing the pink nightgown she died in, but it is spread out like it has wings. I said to her, how did you know she died in that nightgown since you were not there and how did you know we cut the gown down the back of it? (we did that so if she was incontinent, she would go on the padding on the bed and not her gown). She said because I just saw her. After we moved she saw the former owner pacing in her bedroom many nights. At first she was scared and then we had a paranormal investigator come and get a voice recording to confirm it. We heard it. Also the male spirit left. I took her to a psychic that I had never met or discussed this with. He stated immediately after holding her hands, that she was just like him. The descriptions he gave of the spirits she had seen were remarkably so close to her descriptions. Not to mention the fact that he did all of the talking and got about 98% of it right. He then held some classes that I had her attend. She is no longer scared of what she sees and she can block them out for now, but he said they would come back and she would be able to do what he does someday, help others communicate with their deceased family and friends. Now she is content and not seeing things, but she knows one day that door will open again and when it does, she will not be scared any longer.

Thanks, for confirming these things and for bringing James on the program because all of what he said made sense and is very similar to what she has told me. 🙂

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Theresa,

Thanks for that story. And you’re most welcome. I’m glad you’re gaining benefit or enjoyment from the videos.

  12. Bob Olson says:

    Hey J. W.,

You’re very kind. Thanks for the mention, the links, and your kind comments. We did post some articles on about Indigo Children a while back, which happened to get on a CNN episode, Anderson Cooper 360. They showed a young girl–indigo child–reading an article on Magazine about the subject. It’s currently on YouTube. So, yes, I’ll be open to interviewing someone about the subject. We’ll see. If you have any respected experts/authors regarding indigo children, let me know.

    Warm wishes,

    Pls help me out

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Anny,

First, you have my sympathy for your brother’s passing. Second, I think you are very lucky to have connected with him in this way. That’s a wonderful gift. I’ve never known anyone to lose that connection because the services were over; but if you believe it’s true, that might become your reality. I would certainly keep an open mind about it and expect that he will continue communicating with you. Aside from that, I don’t think you need any help. I think your brother is helping you from this point.

My warmest wishes to you and your family,

  15. Rae says:

is it possible that my visions of other ppl struggling on the other side are my struggles Dumped on them

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Rae,

It could be that and/or your beliefs or fears. From the evidence I’ve seen in my investigations of the afterlife, your visions are not reality. Be at peace.

  16. Olavi Hemmilä says:

Thank, Bob. That was a really clarifying interview. I love the way you interact with people, and it was great listening to James. What he says makes sense from a Swedish perspective. The distance does not matter. The webb is a great thing.
    All the best, Olavi

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Olavi,

Coincidentally I’m having dinner with James tonight and introducing him at his live medium demonstration in Manchester, New Hampshire. I’ll relay what you wrote to him. Thanks for your comment. I too love how the Internet brings people from all parts of the world together.

  17. Yaeger says:

Bob, I love your site, but will you ever get anyone on, who will contact Sylvia Browne who passed?

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Yaeger,

No, my experience is that the only people Sylvia is likely to show up for in a reading are her friends and family members. Mediums aren’t able to conjure anyone they wish.

  18. Yaeger says:

I will have an opportunity to see James Van Praagh, at the Parker Play House In Florida very soon.

  19. Pamela Murray says:

Awesome! Wish I could talk to him

  20. Ashley Sonza says:

I have been having a lot of internal quarrel today about life after death vs just blacking out ( the end) and it has given me ALOT of anxiety. My fiancé believes in the ” blacking out ” version very strongly … I don’t want to believe that ( as I never have- his views are just very strongly spoken) … I’m thankful for coming across this site – it has given me some peace that will make for a night of better sleeping. Thank you.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hey Ashley,

I’m happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know.
