Why Spirits Attend Their Own Funerals

Episode 6 of Season 8 on Afterlife TV: This week I discuss the reasons why our loved ones in spirit attend their own funerals and memorial services. It’s probably not what you expect. I also answer the question, ‘How often do your loved ones want you to visit their gravestones?’

I chose these topics because I recently when back to my home town in Massachusetts to attend a relative’s funeral, after which I visited my father’s gravestone. Learn what I left at my father’s grave, and what happened at the funeral that led me to write a very unusual essay (something you may want to do yourself).

Hope you’re enjoying your summer. The photos in the video were taken by a girl I started dating 39 years ago (hint: we’re still going strong today). I look forward to your comments and stories in response to this episode. Check out the show notes below.

Much love, Bob Olson ~ &

  1. Ina Fisher says:

When my Mom died my sister and I both felt her spirit and knew she was letting us know she was OK. I continue to talk to both Mom and Dad and other relatives and always feel their spirits. I know they are all around us and have actually seen a spirit. It was a man who owned a home we were in and never left it. I saw him at night when he would be at the end of my bed. He knew I was the only one who could see him. He was very nice and we saw each other for about a month.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Ina,

Thanks for sharing these experiences. Pretty powerful stuff.

      Bob Olson

  2. Janet says:

    Hi Bob!
Thank you for your insight into the spirit world. I have received many messages from my mother and my brother. My Mom’s favorite flower was/is a pink rose. After her funeral, I went to her grave and asked her to send me a rose to let me know that she was OK. Her answer was sent through the local florist the very next day when I received the most beautiful cut flower arrangement containing a rose in every color imaginable.

  3. Anita Newbill says:

As always, your message was welcome and soothing! Blessings for Light and Love!

  4. Darlene says:

Bob, thank you for your video about the way those that have passed on view us and our rituals conducted as part of their passing from this realm. I have been interested in this type of thing most of my adult life and do hear from the spirit world and can talk to the spirit world from time to time, celebrating their wisdom and life lessons. Your videos make my life richer and know there are more people like me on this planet. Blessings,

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Darlene,

Thank you for your kind comment. I’m happy to hear that my show accomplishes these things for you. Sounds like you have the gift. How wonderful.

  5. Ray says:

    Great episode —— great ideas!!!

  6. Monique Cahoon says:

    HI Bob,
I love the part about the doughnut and coffee, I bet your dad enjoyed that very much. So funny, when I crave something that my husband love to eat, I refrained myself from getting it because I know he is watching and I feel guilty tempting him.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hey Monique,

You’re funny. I know what you mean. I still have the feeling like I want to smoke while driving, yet I don’t smoke! Talk about things from our childhood that stay in our minds.

  7. Monique Cahoon says:

On the day we picked up my husband’s ashes, my oldest daughter suggested we take him for his last ride on his boat. With my youngest daughter and my niece in tow, we headed toward his favorite spot, 2 miles off Waikiki beach and tossed out leis made out of his favorite flowers. My youngest daughter snapped a picture of the beautiful sunset, the picture was incredible, the sun had two huge wings, he was definetely there and that’s what he conveyed to the Medium, he described every details of it!

    • Bob Olson says:

      Yes, Monique,

Great confirmation of what I said about mediums mentioning it. And what an awesome action to take after getting your husband’s ashes. Sounds like a magical moment. I, personally, find the image of leis floating in water so symbolic. I recently saw it on the movie, The Descendants, and was taken aback by it’s beauty and the image of the leis slowly drifting away from the boat. Thanks for sharing this with me.

  8. loreen says:

That was a great episode. It reminded me that when we all went to my Aunt’s unveiling awhile back both my parents grave stone are next to each other, but the ground must have moved under them because they ended up facing each other. That is not how it was when we buried them.
They had a wonderful marriage so it made perfect sense to me.
    Pretty amazing, huh!
ps–Your doughnut story made me hungry so I ran out and bought one.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Loreen,

Made me laugh (doughnut). That’s very symbolic about your parents’ grave stones. Wow. Great story. Thank you.

  9. Brenda Seals says:

Hi Bob, This is the one I have been waiting for. I feel so guilty about not going to the cemetery and needed this confirmation that it is ok not to go. I talk to my people all the time anyway. 🙂 So thank you
    once again.

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Brenda,

I’m happy to hear this episode was just what you needed. Thanks for writing.

  10. Emma James says:

Bob, when my best friend’s father died a few years ago, she had to write the eulogy. I was very ill at the time and had a brain injury. She recommended that I write one for my mother in advance. Well, even though it seemed cold-blooded, I managed to write 3 pages and gather up photos. As I healed, I would correct and change what I had written. It has lifted a worry from me for the future when I will be very upset.

Great show and fab photos as usual. Love the cream dog!

    • Bob Olson says:

      Hi Emma,

First of all, I’m certainly glad you healed your injury. Your story is one of courage, and I love that you changed what you wrote over time. Such an insightful action. Thanks for sharing, and I’m glad you liked the show.

  11. Lillie Ruby says:

I had one of the most clear examples of communication for me this past month. My mother passed away about 8:30 PM January 22. That night I was up of course. I had on a bedside lamp that lights as a nightlight at the bottom and regular at the top of both top and bottom at the same time. Needing more light that night I had it fully lit. While it was raining pretty hard, it wasn’t really windy. About 1 AM, the light clearly had a major power drain and then it came back on but the top blinked once. I was huh odd. I mentally assessed the weather, then bounced on the bed to see if the bed had gotten close to the plug. Then I dawned on me and I said out loud to mom, “Are you ok?” The lamp blinked one time once again. I was up the rest of the night with the lamp on and it never blinked again. I know that was mom saying she was ok.

    • Bob Olson says:

      No question it was, Ruby,

I’m glad you got this message from your mom. Sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing.

  12. maria says:

My dad was very present at his memorial services, I could see him walking by the priest as trying to make sure all was going as planned. He walked as always did and was dressed in a suite I mentioned this to the priest and he assured me that this happened often. Thank you Bob for your episodes, always looking forward to more. By the way I book your book.
