Interestingly enough, while there are many characteristics of our personality that are solely associated with our physical bodies and human egos, there are just as many that carry over from one lifetime to another and into the spirit world. You might call this our soul’s personality. This is why we can have a past-life regression and recognize our sibling, parent or friend from our current life even though they play a different role and might be the opposite sex in that past life.
When I’ve been regressed to past lives, I knew that my sister in one life was my wife in my current life. It was evident as a knowing, but it was also evident by looking at her eyes. Apparently, the eyes really are a window to the soul.
Children have been known to have past-life memories and say things like, “Mommy, Grandma isn’t your mommy. She’s my mommy and your sister.” It’s not that these kids are confused. They are just recalling the relationships from their previous lifetime. Since they have not been away from the spirit world for long, some children retain these memories in their early years of life. Eventually, though, these memories dissipate and are forgotten.
Because there are aspects of our personality and identity that are soul based, there is never an issue of not recognizing a loved one even when they are in a new body in a past or future life. This is probably why we often meet someone for the first time and feel like we’ve known them forever. It’s likely that we shared a past life together.
None of what I just explained, however, changes the fact that a loved one’s personality from this lifetime always stays in tact as part of that person’s soul. In other words, the life we are each living now, including our personalities and every memory we’ll ever have, becomes part of our soul’s makeup. So when our loved ones in the spirit world show themselves to a psychic medium during a reading or show themselves to us in a dream or vision, they are exactly as we remembered them—personality, appearance and all. We just need to keep in mind that they might show themselves in a healthy state even though the last time we saw them they were ill or injured.
