Contrary to common belief, our minds are not an aspect of our brains. No doctor or scientist has ever dissected a brain and found the mind, otherwise known as consciousness. This is why many people who have had near-death experiences (and were determined to be brain dead at a hospital) were able to see and hear everything the doctors and nurses were doing and saying during the time they were pronounced dead. Our minds are spiritual-based and therefore not a physical component of our brains, which is why our conscious minds survive death.
There’s actually no distinction between our consciousness and our spirit. So, in this way, I’m using the words “consciousness” and “mind” in the same way. On the other hand, some people use the word “mind” to mean “brain function.” This sounds like the same concept, but it’s not.
Our brain function controls our body movements, how we relate to our physical environment, and it even determines whether or not we’re going to be good at math, English or music. Our consciousness, from a spiritual perspective, is good at everything. But it’s a fine line that separates brain function and the conscious mind, which is why many doctors and scientists once believed the two were one in the same.
For all intense and purposes, brain function and conscious mind are the same while we’re alive, because our brain function affects our consciousness while we’re in our physical body. But the moment we die, our conscious mind separates from our brain just as our spirit separates from our body. Everything that is physical (body and brain) stops. Everything that is spiritual (spirit and consciousness) continues.
When we die and leave our bodies, we are only consciousness—the same consciousness we had while in our physical bodies, although with much greater awareness. Once we are no longer confined by the physical (which includes our brain and its functions) and we return to the afterlife, our awareness expands to greater spiritual knowing.
