You will certainly be able to communicate with the living while in spirit, although the messages are subtler than the direct communication we know as humans. I recall more than one time after my father died, for example, that the room I was in suddenly filled with the scent of lilacs, even though all the windows and doors were closed and there were no lilacs in the house. This happened to me in my house AND in my car. Lilacs were my father’s favorite flower.
Aroma is a common method of communication for people in spirit, especially if they have recently passed. The communication they are attempting to make is that they are present. They want us to know that they are okay, they are not gone and they are still with us. They are trying to help ease the pain of our grief by sending us the message that they still exist.
There are many ways that we are able to communicate with the living after we’ve died—which I cover in more detail in another section—but none are more direct than through a psychic medium reading.
In a psychic medium reading, people in spirit can say exactly what they want to say to the living. Sure, it’s not a perfectly clear communication as we are used to having, but at least the communication is in words, pictures and feelings. That’s right, the communication comes in sounds that the psychic medium can hear (known as clairaudience), pictures that they can see in their mind’s eye (clairvoyance), and feelings that they can feel in their body (clairsentience). Sometimes the communication simply comes as a knowing (claircognizance).
In your average one-hour reading with a psychic medium, a person in spirit can usually give you evidence that the psychic medium is linked with them by conveying their appearance (what you remember your loved one in spirit to look like), their approximate age, their profession if they had one, or if they were in school, how they passed (car accident, heart attack, suicide), what their personality was like, memories you had together when they were alive, and even some recent past events in your life to prove that they are still aware of what’s going on in your life even though they’re now in spirit (such as they saw you at their grave site).
After the person in spirit has been clearly identified by the medium, the spirit generally conveys non-evidential messages, which are messages that do not necessarily provide evidence that the psychic medium is communicating with them, but rather, are messages of advice, love, pride and forgiveness. Once you are convinced that the psychic medium is really communicating with your loved one in spirit, these messages have a strong emotional impact.
Of course, when you’re in spirit, it might not be easy getting the living to go to a psychic medium. There are a lot of people who are skeptical and even cynical about psychic mediums and spirit communication. I know because I used to be one of those people. That was before I began investigating this field. Still, you’ll have some ability to influence your loved ones on the physical plane to get a reading. You might be able to influence them via their intuition. Or you might be able to create some coincidences where you influence a friend or acquaintance of theirs to invite them to a reading or medium demonstration (where a medium gives readings in front of a live audience).
After you have passed and are in spirit, there are no guarantees that your living loved ones will listen to their intuition or their friend’s recommendations or invitations. In many cases, people never see a psychic medium, thereby never giving their loved ones in spirit an opportunity to communicate with them in this way. In this case, you’ll be limited to other forms of after-death communication, such as spreading scents, flickering lights, making radios or televisions go haywire, or making phones ring (even though no one will be on the other end when they answer).
There’s a good chance that your loved ones will view these signals as mere coincidence, which is why awareness about the afterlife is so important. But the biggest problem with these signals is that you might actually frighten your loved ones while trying to contact them. Thanks to all the TV shows and movies on ghosts and hauntings, your loved ones might not realize it’s you attempting to say hello and might, instead, think it’s a ghost trying to scare them. Such is the challenge of after-death communication.
