Hey everybody, Bob Olson here with the Afterlife TV. You can find us at afterlifetv.com. So what we’re gonna be talking today about is psychics versus mediums. Which one’s better for you? It’s a very great question actually because a lot of people make the mistake of hiring a psychic when they should be hiring a medium or hiring a medium when they should be hiring a psychic. And it’s just because, well, there’s good reasons for it. But I’m gonna explain to you why there’s so much confusion about it.
If you don’t know me, my name is Bob Olson. I founded Afterlife TV and I’m the author of this book, Answers About the Afterlife. I’m a former private investigator who began investigating life after death, searching for evidence of it back in 1997.
Reason to see a psychic
With that, let’s answer this question. Psychic versus medium. Which one’s better? It really depends on what it is that you’re looking for. So the reason you would go to a psychic is because we’ll just say you’re at a crossroads in life. You’re trying to make some decisions, trying to gain some guidance. And really what you wanna do, and I recommend that we do, is we follow our own intuition.
And some people might call it their gut instinct or their gut feeling about what direction we should go regarding any question that we may have in life. Sometimes our heads kind of get in the way and there’s a fine line between our intellect and our intuition, and so we can get a little scrambled up and not really know, am I acting out of fear? Am I acting out of, because this is something I really want? Or am I actually, is this really my intuition speaking to me?
And that is often when I personally would go to a psychic for guidance. Now, psychics are connecting with your aura, with universal energy. One might say infinite intelligence. You could call it the quantum field. You could call it the Akashic Records. You might have heard of that before. They’re able to connect with all of these things in order to help you find the answers that you’re seeking.
Now, the best use of a psychic in this case is not to take what they say and just do whatever they tell you to do. In most cases, the better ones won’t even really tell you what to do, but they’ll make suggestions as to this looks like a good route for you or maybe this person, I kind of sense that there’s, you might deal with some negativity. They deal in energy rather than specific answers for you.
And while some people don’t want that and they can find psychics who will give them more specific answers, my recommendation to you is you go to a psychic to confirm what your own intuition is already telling you.
Recommendations for choosing psychics
So that’s that scenario where you’re trying to make a decision and you’re not sure if your fears are in the way or you want it so bad that you can’t figure out what your intuition is telling you or maybe you’re just not that in touch with your intuition on a day-to-day basis. And so you go to a psychic, also called an intuitive, that can help you confirm what your intuition has been trying to tell you, but maybe hasn’t been getting through. So that is really the reason we go to a psychic.
Psychics go by different names
Now, there’s all types of different psychics. And like I say, sometimes they go by different names, but most people in this field, most of the people on my site, bestpsychicdirectory.com, will call themselves a psychic. And they might call themselves an intuitive, which is the same thing.
And some of them will use tools. They call them divination tools, like a tarot deck might be an example of a tool that they would use. So what happens in that case is they’ll draw out some cards to sort of get the reading started. And for the more gifted psychics who use tarot cards, and so they might call that a tarot reading, it gets the reading going by looking at those cards that were chosen for you, but then they get to use their psychic abilities in order to connect with whatever it is that they’re feeling about that situation.
So the cards sort of guide them to get started, but then they use their own psychic intuitive abilities to give you more information based on what they are getting in that moment during the reading.
What is a medium?
All right, so what about mediums? First of all, I’ll just say, the difference between a psychic and a medium is a medium connects with people in spirit. They can communicate with our loved ones who have died and gone into the spiritual dimension.
The reason for the confusion is back in the 90s, everybody was calling themselves a psychic medium. So now, the word psychic was in the phrase and eventually over time, somewhere in the early 2000s, we just started calling them mediums, kind of took off the word psychic. Obviously these abilities are connected, but if you want to help comfort your grief because a loved one has died and you want to communicate with them through somebody that has that ability, it’s a medium that you want to call, all right?
So psychics is really more for guidance and direction and mediums, what we call mediumship, right? Is who you would call in order to communicate with spirits. And yeah, is it real? Yes, it is real. In fact, it was one of the first pieces of evidence that was convincing to me that I gained when I started my search for evidence of life after death.
Why strangers are best
I always recommend go to a stranger, someone who’s a stranger to you. They don’t know anything about you. Go to them and get a reading with them. And then when they start telling you things about your loved one in spirit that they couldn’t possibly know, things that are accurate, maybe their names, maybe just their initials, maybe their first name, but they will tell you what their personality is like, what maybe they did for work, the circumstances around their death.
They can tell you what their hobbies were, what their interests were, the kind of clothing that they wore typically. Were they grouchy? Were they really loving? And then they will start to communicate with this deceased loved one so that now your loved one in spirit gets to talk to you about maybe things that they’ve witnessed in your life since their passing.
They’ll give you information to prove that they’re around you and are aware of your life right now.
Reasons to see a medium
Lots of reasons to go to a medium. Mostly, a lot of people have a lot of fears, a lot of worries about their loved one in spirit, and it really is comforting to know that they’re okay, they’re happy, they’re joyful, they’re no longer in pain, there’s no suffering anymore, and that they are around and still watching over you and helping to guide you as well.
If the reader does both
Now, different versions of it. There’s a lot of people who work both as a psychic and a medium. So if you happen to call one of these people, you need to let them know what it is that you want a reading for. Don’t expect them to ask. They should, certainly they should ask, but sometimes they just don’t. So we’re dealing with human beings here.
I wrote an article many years ago, so I think it was in the late 90s. Mediums are people too, and it’s true, right? Psychics are people too.
How to choose
So if you’re looking for some direction in life, if you’re looking for some guidance, you’re trying to make some decisions in your life or even you’re just looking for some spiritual growth, but it’s all about you—go to a psychic. You wanna tell them what your goal is in having the reading, and they can say, okay, I do both, but I’ll use my psychic abilities for this. If you definitely wanna connect with someone or people in spirit, then you want to use their mediumship abilities. You wanna tell them you want a medium reading.
How to mix intuitive and spirit communication
Now, there’ll be some that will mix the two. So for instance, I’ve had psychic readings where most of it, 90% of it was exactly as I described, just them using their psychic abilities to get information from my energy, my aura, but then the 10% of the reading was that sometimes a loved one in spirit would show up, and because they can do both, they’ll be giving you a psychic reading, but then they can tap into a little mediumship and they can do a little bit of communication with, say, your deceased loved one in spirit to fill in on what it is they’re saying.
So they might be telling you all about this, their guidance on this decision that you’re trying to make, and then maybe your father or your uncle or your sibling will show up to give their input and tell you. If that’s okay with you, you can let someone, if you know that they work both as a psychic and a medium, you can say, primarily, I want a psychic reading, but if someone in spirit shows up to give some advice to add to it, then I’m certainly open to that and happy about it.
How to be proactive about your needs
So psychic versus medium, which one’s best for you? Now you know, and you know how to be proactive about when you get a reading. One, you can look to see what their website says about the services that they offer. If they only do psychic work, you know what you’re getting now, and if they only work as a medium, now you know, okay, that’s spirit communication. Maybe that’s something you want. Maybe it isn’t.
And if they, on their website, say they do both psychic—they might call it intuitive work—and mediumship, then you can recognize, you might even request, I want a little combination of the two. So that’s what that’s all about.
